According to twitter, it’s National Sandwich day. So naturally, today’s Waco restaurant feature is a sandwich shop.
If you haven’t been to WiseGuys, you need to.
When you walk in the front door, you immediately get full-on Chicago vibes. Signs using slang pepper the walls, murals of Chicago set the mood, and the checkerboard print all around the restaurant gives the taste of Chicago before you even sink your teeth in the food.
Nuzzled between an automotive and boot store on Valley Mills, WiseGuy’s a Chicago Eatery is a true hole-in-the-wall gem.
They offer Chicago style sandwiches (think lots of meat, cheese and optional veggies) hotdogs and hamburgers. When you go for the first time, they recommend you don’t get a burger, be adventurous and try a sandwich. Because lets be honest you can get a burger at, literally, 15 other places in Waco.
I went for the Chicago classic: roast beef, cheese, green peppers, onions and mushrooms. The vegetables were diced instead of sliced Julian style, which made consumption notably easier (take it from a truly messy eater).
The sandwich was delicious and filling. The French fries were salty with a touch of garlic. Football games were playing on the TV. It was a perfect Saturday lunch spot.
Prices were reasonable, and the proportions they gave per price were more then satisfactory. The menu offered an assortment of options I wish my stomach would have made room for, but the sandwich alone filled me to the brim.
Next time I’ll dip into the hotdog section of the menu. The different variations of hotdogs all looked incredible tasty.
Be wise, be adventurous and grab a bite.
